The papers of Moon Landrieu were placed in the Loyola University Library's Archives in February of 1981 and were opened for research in February 1982.

Moon Landrieu, former mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana, was born July 23, 1930, in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, the son of Joseph and Loretta (Bechtel) Landrieu. Moon Landrieu received a BBA from Loyola University in 1952 and his LLB from Loyola University in 1954. He entered the United States Army as a lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General's Corps, 1954-57; he worked as a lawyer with the firm Landrieu, Calogero and Kronlage, 1957-60; as a representative from the 12th Ward of New Orleans, 1960-1966; as a Councilman-at-large from 1966-1970. Moon Landrieu became Mayor of New Orleans, La. from 1970 until April of 1978. During 1975-76 Mr. Landrieu served as president of the United States Conference of Mayors.

The papers of Moon Landrieu deal with the administration of New Orleans, La. and facets of state and national activities. The records were to a large extent arranged alphabetically prior to their arrival at the Library Archives and Research Center, and have been maintained in that state. For the convenience of the researcher, however, the papers of the Landrieu Collection have been subdivided into eight different series according to record type.

Moon Landrieu served as Mayor of New Orleans, 1970-1978. Prior to his inauguration he sat on the New Orleans City Council as an at-large member, 1966-1970.

The papers are divided into two major sub-groups, based on the repositories holding them. Following his departure from office in 1978, Moon Landrieu donated his official papers to Loyola University in New Orleans, where they were arranged and described by the University Archives staff. Other papers, notable those relating to Landrieu's appointments to municipal boards and commissions, and the records of his Public Relations and International Relations Offices were transferred to the City Archives Collection at the New Orleans Public Library. The NOPL materials also include smaller groups of records relating to the Board or Review (dealing with adjustments to city property tax bills) and to the Piazza d'Italia construction project.

In 1988 representatives of the Public Library, of the Loyola Library, and of Mayor Landrieu met and decided to sponsor a joint microfilm project to make the complete Landrieu Papers available to both repositories. The Louisiana Division of the Public Library performed the actual microfilming and produced sixty-three rolls of 16mm film. Complete sets of film are available at both the NOPL and at Loyola, while each repository retains in its own collection original materials.

The microfilm collection does not include the eleven scrapbooks listed in the original Loyola inventory. That document also includes, as an addendum, lists of numerous sound recordings, videotapes, and films later added to the Loyola collection. Those materials, obviously, were beyond the scope of this microfilming project.

In preparing the original Loyola materials for micorfilming, NOPL staff made several additions and corrections to the original Loyola inventory. The resultant revised inventory, including indications of microfilm reel breaks, is filmed as reel #1 in the film collection. Unchanged elements of the Loyola inventory were filmed as they appear in the original. Following the revised Loyola inventory is the inventory of the NOPL materials.
