What are e-reserves?
Electronic reserves are digital copies of materials the library puts on the web at the request of a professor. Students have access to e-reserves 24-hours a day/7 days a week via the "Library Reserves" area of the professor's Blackboard course.
How do I place an article, class notes or other documents on e-reserves?
Please fill out the forms provided for each item that is to be placed on e-reserve. For articles or book chapters to be scanned, print out the fully-completed form and bring the materials to the Learning Commons desk on the first floor of the Monroe Library. For articles or websites that can be linked online, fill out and submit the form from our website. There is no need to bring printouts for these items to the desk.
Can I bring a book to the library to have an excerpt scanned for e-reserves?
Yes, you can. If you would like to have us copy or scan directly from your original, we can do that. Just be sure to give us all of the information about the pages you would like to have scanned. We will return the item to your campus box.
How long does it take to post e-reserves so that they appear online for my students to use?
It takes 48 hours for us to post e-reserves. Items left for processing late on Friday afternoon or evening may not be processed until Monday. Articles are processed in order of receipt. We will try to accommodate requests for rush processing when possible.
Can I place an entire book on e-reserves?
No. Due to copyright law, we are unable to place an entire book or play on e-reserves. Please contact Laurie Phillips at x7833 or phillips@loyno.edu for help in determining if the book is already available in the library's ebook collection or if it can be purchased in electronic format by the library. Otherwise, we must place the book on physical reserve in the library.
What if the full-text of an article is already available on the web in electronic form? Do I have to print it out in order to place it on reserve?
Not necessarily. If the full-text of an article is available online, it may be possible for us to link to the web address (URL) of the article. For example, this can be done if the article has a static (fixed) URL in one of the library's databases. If you post a link to an online article in one of the library's databases please include the library's proxy prefix (http://ezproxy.loyno.edu/login?url=) so your students can access the article from off-campus. Can I keep an article on reserve for more than one semester?
Under Fair Use guidelines, copyrighted material can be placed on reserve for one semester without copyright clearance. However, if a faculty member wishes to use the same item again, the faculty member will need to obtain copyright permission.

I'm receiving an error message that the "file is damaged and could not be repaired" when trying to open an e-reserve from Blackboard.
This is a problem with the Firefox browser. If you receive an error message saying "this file is damaged and could not be repaired" or you have a problem opening e-reserve files with Firefox, either switch to Internet Explorer, or right click on the link and go to "Save Link As" to save the file on your computer before opening.
