Loan Periods & Fines

Borrowers are responsible for knowing when library materials are due and renewing/returning them on time. If you are unsure of when materials or equipment are due, please ask or call 504-864-7111.

Please select your borrower type to review Monroe Library loan periods and fines.

Please note: Overdue notices are sent as a courtesy. Failing to receive an overdue notice does not absolve a borrower from responsibility should they receive a bill or fine. For normal loans an overdue notice is sent 7 days past the due date, 21 days past the due date, and again 28 days past the due date.

With the exception of equipment, the borrower is billed when an item becomes 35 days overdue. Charges for non-returned or lost items will appear on student finance records 35 days past the due date. Throughout any given semester, upon the request of a student, bill and fine amounts may be transferred to a student’s tuition bill when fees exceed $15. Additionally, student fines over $10 will be sent to the Student Finance Office for collection at the end of each semester. For laptops, no refunds will be provided 60 days after the borrower has been charged the replacement fee. Replacement fees for physical books, scores, CDs, DVDs, or other information resources will be refunded if the materials are returned within one year of being charged.

For group study rooms the borrower will be charged the cost of rekeying the door ($50, non-refundable) after 2 business days.

Loyola student and staff borrowers with overdue fees of $15.00 or more will not be allowed to checkout or renew materials or equipment. All others will not be allowed to checkout or renew materials if they have fines of $5.00 or more. We encourage borrowers to return or renew materials on time. Borrowers do not need to bring materials to the desk to renew. Renewals may be made in person, by phone at 504-864-7111, or using the My Account feature in the library's catalog. The fine limits are to keep fines from increasing to exorbitant amounts. Borrowers with excessive overdue material and/or large outstanding bill/fine balances may be blocked from further checkouts.* In addition, any materials that are returned damaged will result in either the cost of repair or replacement.

If you have questions about the library's overdue policies, please contact Evonne Lawrence, Circulation Coordinator, at (504) 864-7165 or ekelly@loyno.edu. If you think you have lost or misplaced something please communicate with Evonne Lawrence as soon as possible to prevent further fines and fees.

* Limited Student Privileges: If a student has a repeated record of not returning library equipment, or excessive fines for library equipment or room keys, the Monroe Library's Circulation Coordinator may limit that student's borrowing privileges until the beginning of the next semester. A student with limited privileges will only be able to check out books, scores, CDs, DVDs, or other physical information resources. The student will not be permitted to check out equipment or study rooms. This decision will be based on the judgment of the Circulation Coordinator, but will be based on repeated equipment fines or lost equipment, equipment or keys kept long overdue, or if a student has been charged to replace a laptop or other expensive equipment. In this case, the library is simply attempting to limit the student's and the library's liability and risk regarding equipment and room keys.

If the student feels that he or she has been given this status unfairly, he or she may appeal to the Associate Dean. This status will be applied during the semester and will automatically revert back to regular student status at the beginning of the following semester.
