Faculty Research Study Rooms
The J. Edgar and Louise S. Monroe Library offers seven research study rooms and two collaborative study rooms available for use by full-time faculty who are engaged in research projects and special class preparation. On occasion, the library may assign a research study to a graduate or honors student.
Policies and Conditions
- Faculty research study rooms are checked out to individuals on a semester-to-semester basis.
- The library considers applications for projects related to an individual’s educational function at Loyola University.
- The library encourages faculty who are working on projects that make use of library resources and services.
- The library encourages faculty who are working on projects that enhance instructional effectiveness and scholarship.
- Faculty research study rooms are not awarded for the purpose of providing an office.
Application Deadlines and Loan Periods
Fall Semester: Applications are due the Friday of the second week of the Fall Semester.
Spring Semester: Applications are due on the second Friday of the Spring Semester.
Summer Semester: Applications are due the first Friday after Commencement.
Research study rooms are assigned for one semester for the following durations:

Privileges
Keys to the faculty research study rooms are checked out to the research study occupant who may use the study room during hours the library is open.
Research study occupants are responsible for the key. If lost, the key the replacement fee is $35.00.
Research study rooms not used at least six times each month will be reassigned.
Library materials used in the study must be checked out to the occupant.
Due to high demand, research studies are not automatically renewed; a new application must be submitted for consideration.
Application Procedures
A completed application must be signed by the dean and department chair.

Proposal Evaluation and Selection
The library considers each application and approves applications with the following priorities, ranked from the highest to the lowest:
- Full-time, tenure-track faculty who are in their junior years of service at the university who are engaged in research, course development, or other projects that facilitate scholarship and teaching and learning at Loyola.
- Full-time, tenured faculty engaged in research, course development, and other projects that facilitate scholarship and teaching and learning at Loyola.
- Graduate and Honors Students working on a thesis or other major project that necessitate the use of library resources. Graduate and honors students must complete an application form that is signed by their thesis or academic advisor and department chair.
In addition to the above priorities, the library considers the following when ranking applications for approval:
- Projects that require the use of library resources.
- The completeness and specificity of the application.
- First-time applications for a study room.
Due to limited number of research study rooms, it may not be possible for all proposals to be approved.
