How do I access databases From Off-campus?
The Monroe Library subscribes to these electronic services for use by Loyola's faculty, staff and currently enrolled students.
If you are off-campus when you try to access library databases, e-books, or other electronic resources, you may be asked to log in.
To log in, use your Loyola email account information. This is the first part of your email address and your email password. For example, if your email address is stiggy@loyno.edu, your username is stiggy.
Passwords follow a default pattern. If you haven't changed your password, it should still be set at the default.
If you started at Loyola before March 20, 2008, the password pattern will be YYYYMM; that is, the four digit year of your birth followed by the two digit birth month. For example, if you were born in May 1980, your default password would be 198005.
If you started at Loyola after March 20, 2008, the password pattern will be 6 characters long with the 1st 2 characters being the 1st 2 characters of your First Name and the last 4 characters being the last 4 digits of your SSN. For example, Mary Smith with the SSN xxx-xx-3456 will have the password ma3456.
Don't know your Loyola email account information? You can find your email address by looking it up in the Loyola directory, or you can find it in the "Personal Info" section of your LORA account.
Who can access databases through the Monroe Library?
Loyola's electronic databases are available to current Loyola University New Orleans students, staff and faculty only. We cannot extend this privilege to alumni or members of the general public. Try your local public library for their offerings.
CAN YOU GET TO OTHER SITES ON THE INTERNET?
If you can't get to any Internet sites, the problem is not the individual database. Contact your Internet Service Provider for help.
WHO'S YOUR INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER (ISP)?
If you have a Loyola account, and a modem on your computer, you can instruct your computer to dial into the Internet through Loyola's PPP service. This method simulates a network connection over a phone line. It is like using Loyola's network from on campus, so you won't need passwords to access Loyola services. For instructions on setting up your computer, see PPP Connection Instructions for Win95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP for Windows users or PPP Connection Instructions for Macintosh for Macintosh users available on the Information Technology site.
If you are using a commercial Internet Service Provider, such as AOL or BellSouth, or if you have a DSL or cable modem, you can still use these library services from off-campus. When you click on a link to one of these services, you'll be prompted for your Loyola Internet account username and password. Once you've entered these, the system will recognize you as a valid user and let you continue your research!
CAN YOU LOG IN TO LOYOLA'S E-MAIL SYSTEM?
If you can't log in to your Loyola e-mail, then you won't be able to use any of our databases from home. Contact Information Technology at 504-865-2255 or techhelp@loyno.edu for help.
DO YOU SEE THe log-in screen?
Do you see a red log-in screen, when you click on one of the databases? This is the proxy server login page. If you don't see this page when you try to get into a database, please report the exact text of the error message when you contact the library.
ARE YOU LOGGING IN Correctly?
Your username is the part of your Loyola email address before the @ sign. For example, hobbs, not hobbs@loyno.edu.
ARE YOU USING A POP-UP PROTECTOR?
Some products require a new window to pop up. If you have a pop-up protector active, try turning it off.
IS YOUR BROWSER SET TO ACCEPT COOKIES?
In Microsoft Internet Explorer version 7, click on Tools, drag down to Internet Options, and click on the Privacy tab. Look at the settings. Here's what works and doesn't:
Block All Cookies: will not work
High: will not work
Medium High: will work
Medium: will work
Low: will work
Accept All Cookies: will work
Turn on Pop-up Blocker: will not work
Other browser (see below) have similar settings. Try changing them to accept more sites and see if this makes a difference.
CAN YOU GET INTO ANY DATABASE?
Try a database from a different company. If you can't get into an EBSCOhost database, try one from ProQuest or CSA. If you can then gain access, the problem is with the database provider. Databases by company:
Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA): Criminal Justice Abstracts, Philosopher's Index.
EBSCOhost: Academic Search Complete, AGRICOLA, Art Abstracts, ATLA Religion + ATLAS, BIOSIS, Business Source Complete, Catholic Literature & Periodical Index, CINAHL Plus Full Text, Communications & Mass Media Complete, EBSCO Animals, ERIC, Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, GeoRef, Health Source: Nursing/Academic, MAS Ultra (School Edition), MEDLINE, Military & Government Online, MLA International Bibliography, Pre-CINAHL, Primary Search, PsycARTICLES, PsycINFO, Regional Business News, Serials Directory.
ProQuest: ABI/Inform, Criminal Justice Periodicals, Los Angeles Times, New York Times current and Historic, Religious Periodicals, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal.
Grove: Grove Dictionary of Art, Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.
Gale: Biography Resource Center, Literature Resource Center, Scribner Writer Series, Twayne Author Series.
Oxford: Oxford English Dictionary (OED), Oxford Language Dictionaries Online, Oxford Reference Online Premium Collection.
If this works, please contact the Learning Commons Desk to report the problem. The telephone number is 504-864-7111. Thank you.
ARE YOU USING A FIREWALL?
A firewall is hardware or software that will block outside users from your computer. A hardware firewall might be part of your home network. Windows XP's Service Pack 2 includes a software firewall that is automatically turned on. If you've upgraded to Service Pack 2, you should have seen a sign of this when you restarted after the upgrade. XP asks questions about your Internet activity. There are also other firewalls like ZoneAlarm and Black Ice that you can install separately.
WHAT BROWSER ARE YOU USING?
America Online (AOL) seems to give people the most problems. Try Loyola's Internet service (see above). Try another browser or a newer version of the same browser. If you're using an older version of Internet Explorer, update your version. If you're using Internet Explorer 7, try a different browser, such as Opera or Firefox.
If you still have problems, contact the library at 504-864-7111, or Jim Hobbs at 504-864-7126 (Monday to Friday 8:45 am to 4:45 pm) or hobbs at loyno.edu. Please have the exact text of error messages and detailed list of steps followed and symptoms.
HAVE YOU CLEARED YOUR BROWSER'S CACHE
Cache is your browser's storage on your computer. Your most recently viewed web pages are saved on your computer and loaded from there instead of from the internet to save time. Your browser may be 'remembering' pages with information in them that's no longer correct. In your browser look for a Tools or Options menu that includes a way to clear the cache memory.
IS THE BROWSER AUTOMATICALLY FILLING IN YOUR LOGIN INFORMATION?
If so, it may be using incorrect information. Turn the feature off or tell the browser not to fill in forms for the site ezproxy.loyno.edu.
WHERE ARE YOU WORKING?
If you're at work, try working at home, and vice versa. If you can, try someone else's computer. Many workplaces have restrictions in effect that block your use of our resources.
ARE YOU USING GOOGLE ACCELERATOR?
If you are using Google Web Accelerator, you may experience difficulties accessing databases available through the Monroe Library. It is possible to turn off Google Web Accelerator while browsing, and we advise you to do so when using library databases.
Do you need additional help?
If you still have problems, contact the Learning Commons Desk at 504-864-7111, or Jim Hobbs at 504-864-7126 (Monday to Friday 8:45 am to 4:45 pm) or hobbs at loyno.edu. Please have the exact text of error messages and detailed list of steps followed and symptoms. (For example: What browser are you using? What services were you using? Can you use your Loyola email?)
