Our 18th & 19th Century Periodicals

British Periodicals, 18th Century | British Periodicals, 19th Century
American Periodicals, 18th Century | American Periodicals, 19th Century

The first periodicals published in the Western world were newspapers, which appeared in Europe during the early 1600s. Soon afterward, the reading public (small though it was) discovered that this medium was both informative and entertaining. With the debut in 1665 of both the Journal des Scavans in France and the Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions in England, a growing scientific community also discovered the periodical as a form of communication that would become indispensable over the course of the next three centuries.

A third major development in the publication of periodicals was the appearance of general magazines in the early 18th century. Interest in these publications cut across all segments of society. British subscription lists that have survived from the period indicate that readers included aristocrats, academics, clerics, and tradesmen. Magazines published in America during the period appealed to an equally diverse audience, one that grew steadily during the 19th century.

These older periodicals provide a unique view of history as it was being made, and they help us to appreciate the popular culture of the past. They may be written in a style that seems peculiar, but they also can be fun to read in a way that no textbook history can match.

The Main Library contains many 18th and 19th century periodicals, but they are not shelved like the rest of the collection.
