Guidelines for Use

The first priority of the J. Edgar and Louise S. Monroe Library is to serve the needs of Loyola University students, faculty, and staff. In that context, the library is able to open some services to members of the local community, while others are available only to Loyola students, faculty, and staff.

The following services are available to the public:

  • Reading print materials from the library's collections in public seating areas
  • Reading microform materials
  • Using equipment in media carrels to view videos
  • Searching our online catalog for information about library holdings
  • Using reference assistance to find information

The following services are available to the public with restrictions:

  • Group study rooms may be checked out to members of the local community at times when there is not high demand from the Loyola community.
  • Members of the local community may purchase a Community Borrower's Card that allows them to borrow books and CD's for an annual fee of $75.
  • Graduates of Loyola University may obtain an alumni card that allows them to borrow books and CD's.

Smoking Policy

Smoking is not permitted inside the Monroe Library. In addition, the Monroe Library's porch and front steps are no smoking areas.

Public Computer Policy:

There is often high demand for the library's public computers. The following policies, which are posted on the computers, guide their use:

  • First priority in use of the computers is given to Loyola students, faculty, and staff.
  • Users of the computers are asked to limit their time online to no more than one hour.
  • Users are also urged to conserve paper by downloading information to disk or e-mailing information to their accounts. Disks are on sale at the circulation desk.
  • The library computers are primarily intended for research. Application software is available on the computers in the first floor microcomputer labs.
